Early Morning Crash At Coastal Road Kills Young Female Engineer

KOTA KINABALU: Police are investigating how a female chemical engineer managed to crash her car into a tree near a bend along the Coastal Highway in Sembulan near here, early Saturday morning.

The probe is being conducted under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, but police believe she was just plain careless, given that the weather was fine and the road was well-lit.

Michelle Eliza Johnny, 27, from Austral Park, Kepayan Ridge, died an hour after she was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital at around 4.42am Saturday, according to a police statement to the media.

Michelle was believed to be on her way home alone at about 3.30am heading towards Tanjung Aru when she apparently lost control of the red Honda CRZ she was driving.

City police chief Assistant Commissioner M. Chandra said Michelle was pinned in the driver’s seat sue to the impact of the crash and firemen from Sembulan had to extricate her from the badly wrecked car.

She was rushed to hospital less than 2 km away but died slightly more than an hour later while getting treatment.

“The car skidded on the road and rammed into a tree, pinning her in the driver’s seat,” said Chandra, adding Fire and Rescue Services personnel it took about half an hour to get Michelle out her from the car,” he said.

Chandra added that initial investigation indicated that Michelle may have been careless.

He also said results from the post-mortem, which will be conducted Saturday night could give investigators some leads, while the wrecked car will be referred to Puspakom for inspection.

Meanwhile on a Facebook posting in her page, a family member wrote that Michelle’s remains is now lying at Penampang Lighthouse Parlor, Kampung Kolopis Penampang.

A requiem mass will be held at Stella Maris Church, Tanjung Aru on Monday (Feb 27) at 10.00 am and thereafter cortege will proceed to Kampung Kopimpinan Cemetery, Penampang for her final resting.

On Feb 7, 2010, very close to the scene of the Saturday morning crash, three doctors from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital died when the car they were in crashed into a mini bus.
