LABUAN: A woman who tried to end her life by jumping off the ledge of a three-storey shop lot that housed an entertainment outlet at Utama Jaya here shortly after noon, was rescued after her fall was ‘broken’ by rescuers.

Policemen, fire-fighters and members of the public held together a canvas sheet which broke the fall of the woman, said to be a guest relations officer (GRO) in the 12.46pm incident.

The woman in her 30’s was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. She was said to be depressed due to personal problems.

The drama attracted a small lunch time crowd, with passers-by who had spotted her standing precariously by the ledge’s edge shouting to her not to jump, while someone called the Fire and Rescue Department.

Rescuers initially tried to talk her out from jumping but they could not approach her as the ledge was blocked by metal grilles.

Later, several men held together a canvas sheet and the woman jumped onto it.

One of the rescuers, who only wished to be known as Amin, said there were about a dozen of them who spread out the canvas and got the woman to jump on it.

Police are said to be investigating the case under Section 309 of the Penal Code for attempted suicide. If found guilty, the offence is punishable with up to a year in jail, or a fine, or both.
