KOTA KINABALU – Opposition veteran, Lim Kit Siang wondered aloud as to why Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman has yet to deny rumours he is quitting the Federal cabinet.

The DAP strongman pointed out that he thought it strange that other leaders seemed to be making denials on behalf of Anifah, the younger brother of Sabah chief minister Datuk Musa Aman.

“Anifah has had ample time to make the denial (of the quit rumours) before he left for an overseas mission today,” Kit Siang told a Pakatan Harapan (Sabah) Chinese New Year gathering at Luyang here on Saturday.

Kit Siang said that Anifah himself should clarify his stand of the matter instead of leaving it to the Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to deny it.

“This talk (about quitting) started on Friday and last night he could have issued a statement or hold a press conference to deny it.

“Instead, he has left for Brussels leaving it hanging, making the people continue to talk about it, especially with elections round the corner.

“Is he (Anifah) quitting because of the 1MDB scandal, or is it the dubious allegation of kleptocracy that is making the rounds, or is it because of elections,” he asked.

Earlier in the day, Ahmad Zahid accused (Selangor Menteri Besar) Datuk Seri Azmin Ali of spreading lies with his claim that a senior minister has resigned.

Ahmad Zahid said although Azmin did not name the minister, he (Ahmad Zahid) knew Azmin meant the person to be Anifah Aman.

“No minister has resigned. I was with Anifah at an event here on Friday evening.

“Today, Anifah flew to Brussels (Belgium capital) to represent Malaysia,” Ahmad Zahid said after launching the People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) 45th anniversary celebrations here.

He said it was typical of Azmin and the opposition parties to spread lies especially through the social media.

The Star online quoted Ahmad Zahid saying he had posted on Twitter a photo of him with Anifah on Saturday.

On Friday, Azmin had tweeted: “Is it true that a Senior Minister has resigned?”

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak also responded Friday night by tweeting that no minister had informed him of a decision to quit the Cabinet.

Najib said that he could only assume that Azmin was lying to create a stir.

Attending the DAP function was its Kota Kinabalu MP, Jimmy Wong as well as Sabah DAP leaders, along with those from Parti Keadilan Rakyat and Amanah Negara.

Hosting the gathering were DAP Sabah leaders as well as those from PKR, Christina Liew and Kenny Chua and Amanah’s Hamzah Abdullah.

Among other Sabah opposition leaders seen at the gathering were those from Parti Cinta Sabah and STAR.
